Good Friday Concert at Leeds Parish Church

The St Peter’s Singers of Leeds return fresh from a tour of Mallorca, which took in the stunning surroundings of Palma’s La Seu Cathedral. Muro and Santanyi in the north of the island together with two venues in Palma saw the Leeds based chamber choir receive critical acclaim.

On Good Friday the choir will sing the very rarely heard Stabat Mater, composed by Haydn in 1767 and first performed under the composer’s direction during Holy Week 1768 in Vienna. The Singers, will be joined by St Peter’s Chamber Orchestra and Soloists under the direction of Dr Simon Lindley. The Good Friday concert will also include the evergreen Theresa Mass, one of the products of Haydn’s extraordinary compositional Indian Summer in the 1790s and early 1800s.

St Peter’s Singers is a mixed choir of about fifty voices based in the City of Leeds, directed by Dr Simon Lindley. For over thirty years the Singers have enjoyed a close relationship with Leeds Parish Church (St Peter-at-Leeds), where the majority of our concerts and liturgical appearances take place. The Choir also performs at many other venues in and around Leeds as well as further afield, including Leeds Town Hall, Derby Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral and Worcester Cathedral. York Minster has also been the venue for four memorable presentations in recent years, including the most recent 60th birthday celebration concert for Dr Simon Lindley entitled ‘the composers conduct’. This presentation included guest conductors and composers Dr Francis Jackson CBE, Dr Donald Hunt, Philip Moore as well as Dr Lindley himself.
